Learning Differences

Not everyone learns the same way, and some pretty great people have struggled with learning differences.

Actress Whoopi Goldberg, business leader Charles Schwab, and Olympic diver Greg Louganis, all have struggled with a learning disability (LD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder AD/HD.

So while having learning differences can offer a few complications, Nichols has services and people ready to help you. Learning differences don't need to stop you from being successful.

Introduction

Nichols College is committed to providing educational and counseling services for students with learning differences. Our goal is to provide resources for students to reach their learning potential.

College students, as adults, have a right to privacy. A student with learning differences decides whether to disclose that fact to the college. Learning differences accommodations can only be provided if the student contacts the Assistant Dean for Learning Services and submits the appropriate documentation. Appropriate documentation must include the test scores from the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised (WAIS-R) or (WAIS-III) and appropriate tests and letters from qualified medical professionals. Documentation and testing must have been completed within three years prior to the enrollment of the student.

• Individual tutoring in most subject areas
• Professional ESL tutor

• Drop-in, appointment, block, and weekly tutoring available

Career Counseling - Director of Career Services

Accommodations

Accommodations are developed on an individual basis with the student. The Assistant Dean for Learning Services coordinates this process. The following is a list of some accommodations:

• Extended time on exams
• Testing in the Academic Resource Center
• Alternative exam format
• Limited course schedule
